Congress forms Israel Allies Caucus

On Thursday, July 27, Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL) announced the formation of the Congressional Israel Allies Caucus to help mobilize Christian support of Israel. As Israel faces growing international pressure to agree to an immediate ceasefire, the announcement came as a welcome expression of the U.S. Congress's support for Israel.

According to Weldon, "During the current crisis, Israel and the world need to know that the U.S. Congress stands firm in its commitment to Israel's protection and Israel's right to defend itself from terrorists and state-sponsors of terrorism. The Congressional Israel Allies Caucus being formed today is a reflection of that commitment and will give Members of Congress another means to communicate closely with an important ally."

The bi-partisan caucus is co-chaired by Rep. Weldon and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY). Other members include Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and Rep. Gene Green (D-TX). At least 20 additional members are expected to join.

The caucus is modeled after the Israeli Knesset's Christian Allies Caucus (CAC), formed over two years ago with the expressed purpose of strengthening ties between the state of Israel and Christian Zionists. Recognizing the importance of outreach with the pro-Israel evangelical community, the Congressional Israel Allies Caucus will work together with the CAC in empowering Christian Zionist groups.

Coordination and communication between the two caucuses will be strong. Weldon and Engel are planning regular exchange visits between DC and Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem Connection played a key role in lobbying for the formation of the Israel Allies Caucus. It has been something TJCI has been coordinating with Josh Reinstein, CAC's director, since January. The idea, however, got real momentum in July with the start of the war with Hizbullah and the Christians United for Israel Washington DC Summit. With the formation of the Caucus, TJCI will help organize and facilitate monthly meetings. These meetings provide an ideal platform for Christians United for Israel to have continued input to Congress.

Please pray for the growth and guidance of the Israel Allies Caucus. Pray for its influence on Capital Hill. And pray that a sister caucus will be formed in the Senate.
